Highlight the center of the breast area and the front side of the legs with Yellow Oxide.
COMB, WATTLE, EYE AREA,
AND BEAK
(Refer to Step-by-Step on page 61.)
Basecoat the comb and wattle using a no. 2 filbert with Naphthol Red. Shade the comb and wattle with a 1⁄4" angle brush sideloaded with a brush mix of Burgundy+Naphthol Red. Using a no. 2 oval dry brush, add highlight with a brush mix of Naphthol Red Light+Warm White+Hansa Yellow (1:1:tch).
Basecoat the beak using a no. 3 round with Yellow Ox- ide. Shade next to the head using a 1⁄4" angle brush side- loaded with Raw Sienna. Shade again with a little Burnt Sienna. Using a liner and thinned Burnt Sienna, paint a line on the beak and paint the nostril by setting the brush down and lifting up.
FIRST LAYER OF FEATHERS
(Refer to Step 2 of the Step-by-Step on page 61.)
Sideload a 1⁄2" angle brush with the Olive Green Mix and add this color to the breast feathers.
Starting at the bottom of the breast, set the tip of the brush down along the outside edge and push the brush toward the tip, giving the effect of a jagged edge. Lift the brush and continue up the breast until you reach the bot- tom of the wattle, changing the angle of the brush to fol- low the curve of the breast. Add a few green feathers in- side the breast area.
When painting the stroke feathers, see Step-by-Step photos for placement of the different color strokes. The dark feathers are painted first working forward with lighter and brighter colors. Load a no. 3 round brush with Dark Red Mix and stroke the dark feathers in on the tail and the wing. Pinch-wipe the brush and pick up Naphthol Red Light and add the red feathers to the tail. Pinch-wipe the brush again and load with Brown Mix and add some smaller strokes.
Rinse the brush and load with Raw Sienna. Paint the strokes on the wing and head. Paint some filler strokes on the tail placing them in between the tail strokes al- ready painted and around the outside edges to make the tail feathers look fluffy. Pick up some Yellow Oxide in the dirty brush and over-stroke to lighten. Add a little Warm White to the dirty brush for a final highlight on some of the strokes.
Using a liner and thinned Raw Sienna paint hair-like feathers across the top of the head, pulling out over the
comb. Rinse the brush and load with thinned Yellow Oxide and pull some lines on top of the Raw Sienna lines.
ADDING COLORFUL FEATHERS AND LINEWORK
(Refer to Step 3 of the Step-by-Step on page 61.)
Pick up some Warm White in the dirty brush and over-stroke the Raw Sienna feathers on the head and wing, keeping the strokes a little smaller and inside the Raw Sienna stroke.
Now add some color to his tail feathers! You can decide what colors you want to see and add more or less depend- ing on your preference. Let’s start with the green strokes. Load a no. 3 round brush with Green Mix and paint three or four green tail feathers in the center area of the tail. Pick up a little Warm White in the brush and paint a highlight on the green strokes, keeping it smaller and inside the stroke. Next, wipe the brush and load with the Blue Mix and paint some large and small blue tail feathers through- out the tail, laying the stroke on top of and in between the strokes previously painted. Pick up a little Warm White and highlight the blue strokes. Rinse the brush and load Violet Mix and paint a few violet strokes. Pick up a little Warm White to highlight. Finally, add some Brown Mix tail feathers at the base of the tail under the wing.
LINEWORK AND SHADING
(Refer to Step 3 of the Step-by-Step on page 61.)
Sideload a 1⁄2" angle brush with Brown Mix and shade the base of the tail under the wing. Shade the wing under the feathers from the head, and shade along the inside edge of the breast under the feather from the head and wing.
Load a liner with thinned Dark Red Mix and shadow all lines at the top of the wing and at the top of the feathers next to the face. Add some Naphthol Red linework to the feathers near the face.
Paint strokes on the legs and feet using a no. 1 round and a brush-mix of Raw Sienna+Burnt Sienna. Highlight the strokes with Yellow Oxide.
