peer-to-peer groups

by the Enhanced Extension Coordination in GBR project
We are dependent on communities playing an active participatory role to drive change, such as the large- scale land management practice change needed to improve water quality outcomes for the GBR.
Producer peer-to-peer learning groups, when fostered and supported, can create change, identify problems and implement solutions at the community level.
Peer-to-peer learning is not a new concept, we have all done it at times in our lives. For example, many farmers who have been part of Landcare groups or on-farm demonstrations have been participating in peer-to-peer learning. It is best described as people helping each other to learn. This is done by sharing experiences, advice, feedback and thoughtful questions. Innovations that ‘work’ are shared across members. Peer groups build social connections. Farmers get great personal pride and satisfaction from assisting another farmer and so being part of a peer group is also good for their wellbeing.
The peer-to-peer learning approach is a key success of the EEC project.
46 peer-to-peer producer groups were supported– providing safe and facilitated opportunities for shared learning to occur amongst others who they respect and trust.
The EEC project has provided project funding, supported training for group facilitators and developed guidance materials for peer-to-peer groups.
This booklet compliments the Peer-to-Peer ‘Start- up’ kit by providing a snapshot of the peer-to-peer activities supported by the ECC project. These included topics such as:
• improved practices on farm
• enhancing farm business management
• support capability of young farmers
• assist women to engage and network within the agricultural industry
• technical training and capability in land management.
The peer-to-peer ‘Start-up’ kit, link below, has been produced as a resource to help more producers start and sustain a group.
