Leadership
The top item driving engagement is leadership’s commitment to making the organization a great place to work. As the leaders of your organization, you set the tone. And how you develop your talent
is critical to creating a culture that retains employees.
• Work with HR and your leadership team to engrain professional development into your culture through a variety of programs.
• Have regular conversations about career growth with your direct reports.
• Ensure that your reports are also facilitating these conversations with their employees.

Human Resources
Be a professional development resource for your employees and managers.
• Include professional development topics and content as part of your regular internal communication pieces like newsletters, Intranet, etc.
• Empower managers with conversation starters and questions to ask employees about their career growth aspirations and interests.
• Include a listing of upcoming professional development opportunities in your newsletter or Intranet, as well as a list of resources for external training opportunities. Include a call to action for employees to talk with their managers about these opportunities.
Managers
Be proactive and discuss professional development before employees ask.
• Incorporate the topic into regular one- on-one conversations with employees.
• Provide ideas for professional opportunities, but also expect them to bring some to the table.
• Give employees the power to be active in controlling their destiny.
• Allow freedom for them to explore a variety of interests.
• Help guide them and weigh pros and cons of various opportunities.
• Give training a positive spin if you’re asking them to develop areas they’re not particularly interested in. Emphasize benefits, and give them the opportunity to choose their next development opportunity.
Make work awesome.
