2. Esophagus
When you eat, the food chewed in the mouth will be passed on to the stomach
organ to pass through the next stage of digestion. This process involves the
digestive tract called the esophagus.
The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. The
esophagus is about 20 centimeters long and is lined with Mucous, moist pink
tissue. The esophagus is directly behind (trachea) and the heart and in front of the
spine. In the esophagus, peristalsis occurs; this movement helps propel Food from
the oral cavity to the stomach for about 6 seconds.
