To explain, “Savings” also came into the Scout training and
the boys going to annual camp were encouraged to open a
“Camp bank”. Each week they could deposit whatever they
could afford into the “Bank” with the Scout unit and that way
pay for the holiday.
UNIFORM AND THE LIKE
Our Sea Scout uniform was outstandingly smart. Quite
different to “ordinary” Scouts and the boys took great pride in
wearing it. Affording it was a big problem for some who lived
on estates close to our Unit base, where money was in very
short supply. To cope with this we kept stocks of second hand
but good uniform items for boys to buy at low cost.
(The old 1st Boston Scout HQ demolished ready for the
new one to be built.)
Patrol leaders with the guidance of the Unit leaders were
also able to make decisions to help patrol members financially
in other ways if needed. Unit funds could be used to assist with
big cost items like outings and Annual camp so that boys from
homes where money was in short supply, were never left out.
