The extra long and quickly adjustable’ crane’ jib was designed to reach right over the old
horse wherever he lay. The slings gripped his body as soon as the crane began the lift so
that the first stage was lifting him into the vertical position.
We could not risk lifting him sideways and possibly breaking his back, he had to be secure
and brought upright in the first stage, then up onto his feet. It all worked wonderfully and
was well capable of coping with the poor old chap wherever he was to fall.
A PROBLEM WITH BONNIE
No sooner had we coped with this huge problem when we realised that Bonnie was also
suffering with a different problem.
This old chap had worked for Whitbread’s Brewery in the city of London for most of his life.
The full story of how these two got together is covered in Goliath’s own Book.
Bonnie whose real name was ‘Tide’ was a very large grey Shire horse, he was far wider
than Goliath and quite probably far heavier. His legs were shorter and thicker but his
nature was equally gentle, they were inseparable.
Bonnie was having difficulty with his breathing, after moving only a few paces across the
large open shed that they lived in he seemed totally out of breath.
