CHAPTER FOUR
“ANOTHER CUB OUTING”
We had fairly recently come to live just outside the small Market town of Spilsby and
following a plea in the local press for leaders to help save the local Scout/ Cub Unit from
nd
closure, I had become Group Leader and Ruth the Cub leader of the 2 Spilsby Scouts.
Picture:
Earlier the same year part of the Cub unit spent an evening with our horses.
This was to be our first Scout unit outside the old Boston District, where Ruth and I were
St
members of the 1 Boston Sea Scouts for over 17 years and then after moving to New
th
Bolingbroke we moved a cub unit from New York to Carrington and started the 6 Boston.
Now we were among folk who knew nothing of our background, only that perhaps I was a
bit bossy!
REFLECTIONS
After leaving Boston in 1970 Ruth and I had continued with the Sea Scout Unit until the
long travelling made it too difficult.
Before long however we had heard that a small Cub Unit located just outside Coningsby
had no leaders. It had very few members but a strong group committee (adult supporters).
We moved the unit to Carrington. Much against the wish of the parent supporters, who
initially could not see my reasoning. It was only five miles or so from its old location and
many of the boys still only had two miles maximum to travel to get to meetings.
