25 Machinery Isolation Procedure
Before any work on fixed or static equipment can
commence, Isolation procedure must be performed.
Work involving the trommel will require total plant
isolation but some tasks can be performed under
local isolation. Work involving local isolation must be
approved and agreed by a manager.
1. Total isolation will require any TJ employee or
external contractor involved in the task, to have a
padlock on a multi clasp attached to the main power
switch on the equipment supply panel.
2. Local isolation will require any TJ employee or external contractor involved in the task, to have
a padlock attached to the isolator related to equipment being worked on. It may also be
necessary to isolate linked or associated equipment, please ensure all isolators are locked out
in the off position only.
3. Only once the main power or local isolators have been locked off, may work commence. Please
make other site personnel aware of your intentions, and your location.
4. Always use a multi clasp to lock off when more than one person may need access to machine.
This allows each person to apply their own padlock.
5. You must keep your own key with you whilst the padlock is in use. Do not give your lock out key
to another person. You are responsible for returning your lock and key to the lock out station
once work is completed.
6. All the padlocks and callipers are hung on a board either in the picking station, mess room or
weighbridge office.
7. When your work is complete, remove and return the padlock and key. However the last lock
must not be removed until all work is completed, guards are secure and the machine is made
safe.
8. On mobile plant, the isolator keys when switched off may be removed from the lock. Keep the
key safe and only return it when any work is complete and the machine is safe to use.
9. If in any doubt, a site manager/foreman must inspect the machine before any work commences.
10. Always check the relevant Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments relating to any tasks to
be undertaken.
11. Failure to follow the correct isolation procedure may result in disciplinary action.
12. It is an offence to remove or tamper with an isolated padlock without the direct authority of
the manager or assistant manager.
13. If a key is lost or taken off site while the padlock is fitted, it must be reported immediately to a
manager. Only the manager or his deputy can remove this padlock after an inspection of the
equipment to ensure it is safe to run.
14. If all of the above controls are followed then the risk of injury to persons will be eliminated or
greatly reduced.
