Covid or no Covid, time passes too fast.
The CYAA mail sent out on July 1, so long ago it seems, carried
the story on how the CYAA Port Phillip fleet water social
distancing event went. So good to be back on the water was the
July 1 story. This mail, Oct 2, no such good time on the water
stories feature. All we have is plans to return. There is some hope
on the horizon.
Thursday, last week, discussions between the five Port Phillip club Intentions to enter
managers and Yachting Victoria’s Gavin Wall indicated, all being well,
the current Covid-19 restrictions for Melbourne will be further relaxed Let’s know your yes/maybe/no intentions to
on October 25. With these restriction relaxations in mind, news be part of the postponed 2020 Cup Regatta
received from Mercedes III outlining their plans to time trial the Geelong passage race
themselves up to racing trim. Details of Mercedes III plans are included
provided below. As for what happened CYAA wise, between July Intents for the Sorrento Cup and Series racing

Today through the efforts of Yachting Victoria’s Gavin Wall, the Vic Dept of Health
define what a marina is. Clarification of this definition will allow you can go out under
motor or sail power with family or one non family on your classic provided if you stay within the 5
km radius, the two hour exercise limit and social distance. Experience says don’t go. No matter what excuse
exceeding the two hour limit to and from your home address and bang to rights.
A Vic Roads boat owner tip. Sort out your boat’s garaging address
Restrictions on access to recreational vessels have been relaxed for those who live outside the 5 km radius. Anyone
outside this 5km limit who intends to visit their boat best have their boat and club member details with them. To
help your boat owner bona fides, make sure the Vic Roads data base lists your boat’s garaged address is it’s on
water location. Besides Covid-19 reasons, this is suggestion has merit for general use and insurance reasons. Take
a look at this first hand fact based story on how to go about the change of address. It’s not easy, nothing is, but
recommended. Setting up a Vic Roads account is not too big a leap of faith into Vic Roads care.
Mercedes III intentions for Oct 31 time trials subject to
Covid-19 rules at that time.
As noted in the Sept 24th web site posting, here’s the Mercedes III
intentions to return to racing trim. They intend to begin on the October
31 weekend. The dates and times used are those of the postponed
2020 Cup Regatta, 10:00 am and 1:30 pm with a lunch break on the
RMYS marina. Don’t forget hand sanitisers and wipes.
This means five opportunities to time trial against themselves on similar 2017 Cup Regatta Race 1 start line P
courses each day. The proposed venue for these MIII time trials will be waters off the St. Kilda Breakwater. All CYAA
skippers are welcome to use these same dates and times for their own time trials.
Results from CYAA racing prior to the Covid-19 indicate all classic crews and boats were running in top race trim.
For Classic skippers, when racing restarts, they know both crew and boat will need to be tuned up and prepared
for fast and co-ordination racing action. Time trialing is an ideal way to be somewhat prepare for that run to hit
the start line on time and continually watch that sail trim.
Participation in these time trial by other CYAA members is all voluntary, but it’s the way to go. No doubt that lovely
person aka “the handicapper” will be on hand to observe.
