from Rome to make peace with Egypt and offered his daughter Cleopatra in marriage to
Ptolemy V Epiphanes. He was hoping to weaken Egypt, but his plan did not work as
Cleopatra sided with her Egyptian mate.
The next several verses then discuss more political intrigue and battles between the
Syrian and Egyptian leaders as well as Rome. In fact, when Rome sided with Egypt,
Antiochus departed Egypt and took out his rage on the Israelites in his path. Antiochus
and his soldiers stopped the worship and sacrifices at the Jewish temple, attacked the
city on a Sabbath and slaughtered men, women, and children. They desecrated the
temple, sacrificed a pig on the altar and erected an idol to Zeus in the temple.
Verse 32 - Tells of the rise of Judas Maccabeus and other Jews who successfully revolted
and overthrew Antiochus.
Verses 36 to 45 - Fast forward to the time of the end when the Antichrist rules for seven
years. The Antichrist is described as having no desire for women, so he could either
be homosexual or have no normal interest in women. Power is his god. The Antichrist
worships power and seeks to gain power over all the world. When a united army from
the south (Africa) comes against him, he sets up his command post between the
Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea, with his troops occupying the land (Zechariah
12:2-3; 14:2-3).
This sets him up to be destroyed at the return of Christ.
