The Time of the End
Chapter 12
The book of Daniel closes with a vision of the end of the earth. This will be a time of
trouble and terror as has never been seen since the beginning of the
world. Christ referred to this in Luke 21:25-26 when he said, “On the
earth distress of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea, men
fainting for fear, and expectation of the things that are coming on
the world.” This time of horror will be followed by the resurrection
of the dead and then the everlasting glory of the saints into
eternity. Some key verses from Chapter 12 follow:
“ And many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up,
2
some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt”
(Daniel 12:2).
Two different groups will arise from death. One group will rise to
eternal life and the other group to eternal torment. Those who
influence others for righteousness will shine like stars in various
degrees of light (I Cor. 3:8).
This time of the end refers to the seventieth week of Daniel and
the seven-year period of the Tribulation.
10
“ Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will
continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who
are wise will understand” (Daniel 12:10).
Many Jews will become followers of Christ during this time and realize
that Jesus is the promised Messiah. The Bible indicates that one-third of
the Jewish people will be saved (Romans 11:26, Revelation 11:13).
11
“ From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination
that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one
12
who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days” (Daniel 12:11-12).
This was the end of the daily temple sacrifice that the Antichrist allowed
the Jews to perform. The Antichrist halts the daily sacrifice and then sets
up the “abomination that causes desolation,” an image of the Antichrist in
the temple to be worshiped.
“ As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days
13
you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance” (Daniel 12:13).
Daniel served God faithfully in his generation and was chosen by God to bear
witness to leaders of two world empires. Like the apostle John in the New
Testament, God also chose to reveal to Daniel a vision of the last days.
