Those of you who hike or climb regularly at the Rock might have noticed some changes along
the trails. Thanks to the generosity of our Red Rock Canyon partners, Summerlin (The How-

ard Hughes Corporation) and REI, Friends of Red Rock Canyon and the Bureau of Land
Management were able to create and install improved trail signage.

The continued community and corporate support is critical
to preservation and protection of Red Rock Canyon. This

latest cooperative effort provides accurate signage replac-
ing outdated or non-existent trail information.

Again, Red Rock Canyon is fortunate to have the support
from both our community and concerned corporate bene-

factors. It would be impossible to operate Red Rock Can-
yon safely and effectively without the help of our friends.
                                                                                       Mark Beauchamp installing new trail

Sharon’s Slant (continued from page 5)

Written by Nancy Wood and illustrated by Max Grafe, Old Coyote is a wonderful chil-
dren’s book that can be enjoyed by elementary age children. The book tells the story of a
coyote’s final day on earth as he says goodbye to his desert home, his family and his
friends, all of whom helped Coyote live a long and happy life. The author deals with
themes of nature, environment and loss in a manner sensitive to her young readers. The
beautiful illustrations add to the warmth of the book.

Since I am a puzzle book addict, any activity book for kids
will catch my eye. Get them started young is my motto! The
Great Southwest Activity Book has word finds, mazes, cross-
words and more. As a bonus, it is in color. There are bird and
coyote dot-to-dots, a travel bingo game and several pages for drawings and coloring--forty-
                               nine pages in all.

As a retired elementary school teacher, I enjoy children’s literature as much as I like books
for grown-ups. Some of the best literature written today is for children. Check out Elements
children’s book collection the next time you visit Red Rock Canyon.
