A MESSAGE FROM MRS DYER

This week our Year 4 will continue studying the story ‘How to Train your Dragon’ by Cressida

Cowell. They will investigate how language is used to describe a setting, they will explore the
use of specific nouns, adjectives and figurative language (including metaphor and simile)
finding examples of each. They will then evaluate how effective these descriptions are. In
their grammar work they will begin by focusing on how the use of pronouns helps writing to

flow; they will complete exercises to develop their skills and then use this learning to complete ‘Wanted Posters’
warning the locals in the story about Toothless the Dragon. They will learn the correct use of speech punctuation and
write a piece of dialogue between Toothless and Hiccup based on Riddles from the story.

The Year 5 pupils will begin to innovate the story of ‘Medusa – The quest for Perseus’, they will independently write
paragraphs, including plenty of dialogue, about the children playing on the beach. They
will show the characters of the different children by what they say and the reporting
clauses that are used. They will refer to their previous learning on correctly punctuating
direct speech and including interesting synonyms for the word ‘said’. They will conclude

the week looking at story telling techniques, watching and discussing an on-line story-
teller deliver the story of Perseus.

The Year 6 children will continue their work on ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief’
through reading the next part of the text and answering comprehension questions. They will
investigate word classes, creating a table of definition of words from the story. They will then
take on the characters of the Headteacher and Percy Jackson to write letters in role. Firstly,
using formal and then informal language comparing the different use of grammar, sentence
structure and language to make each letter sound authentic.

As always, we thank you for your co-operation in supporting your children with their on-line learning. It is greatly
appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher via the class Dojo if you have any questions. I am
also always available via email if you wish to speak to me. Stay Safe and we hope to see you very soon.
