Discovery
For advertisers, it means the ability to analyse in real-time the vast quantity of shared, saved and viewed images across all platforms, apps and mobile devices – about three billion uploaded every day.
There are various areas of utility why Image Recognition is recently picking up speed. The two that are standing out the most are Search and E-commerce.
Search: An app that can tell a traveller the word for an object
How do you say “umbrella” in Chinese? These days, if you’re traveling in China, you can use the image-recognition technology embedded in Baidu Translate to tell you without using the English word — all it takes is a picture of an umbrella.

E-Commerce: WeChat embraces Image Recognition features which bene ts online retailers
Since the release of the WeChat 5.0 version which has launched in August 2016 users could already learn more about a product like books or music albums by scanning the barcode on the cover
or packaging and be redirected to the company website. In some instances, consumers could go directly to the e-commerce sites for purchase.
A few weeks ago, WeChat released a new Image Recognition Feature. Now, users no longer have to rely on barcodes but can simply scan a book cover and e.g. read reviews from Douban Book
(a popular Chinese platform for book ratings and reviews) or purchase the book directly from online retailer Dangdang.com. WeChat plans further enhancements to this service which is currently offered for free.
The Image Recognition Market is one to watch – and it’s expected to grow rapidly
