 St Augustine’s Abbey
St Augustine’s Abbey, like the Cathedral, is part of the Canterbury World Heritage site and is full of history and beauty. Originally a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent, it Is now home to a museum and the ruins of the Abbey.
You can experience and interact with many parts of the 16th-century monastery using a free audio tour and a new virtual reality experience. This attraction features a variety of ancient relics and recent studies suggest it may be the birthplace of the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts events leading up to the Norman conquest of England. You will find the abbey on Longport, a ten-minute walk from the town centre.
Westgate Towers -
Museum and Viewpoint
The Westgate Towers is the last surviving of seven medieval gates in Canterbury,and the largest remaining medieval gate in England.
Now a museum, Westgate is a Grade I listed building, an ancient monument, is full of history and also offers a breath-taking view of the city.
In 1453 Henry VI granted the city permission to keep a gaol at the Westgate, now The Pound Bar and Kitchen (also featured in this guide).
You could also try the new Escape the Towers attraction, which is located in the old goal.
Westgate towers is at the bottom of the high street, a short walk from Canterbury West Station.
