Overview
A Level Drama & Theatre is a creative, practical and challenging
course whereby students will develop skills in producing
theatre as a performer, director and designer.
Learners will be exposed to live theatre, a variety of classical
and contemporary texts and influential theatrical practitioners,
companies and styles.
This course aims to cover a vast range of social, political,
historical drama and theatre giving students a well-rounded
and practical knowledge of theatre making but also an insight
into the world in which they live.
Course Content
This qualification comprises
three elements:
Component 1 – Theatre
Workshop (20%): A devised
performance or design
based on a classical text.
This component is assessed
internally through a
performance/design as
well as the submission of a
creative log.
Component 2 – Text in
Action (40%): A scripted
and devised performance
or design developed in
response to a stimulus. This
component is assessed by
a visiting examiner through
final performance and the
submission of a process
report.
Component 3 – Text in
Performance (40%): An
exploration of three set texts
culminating in a written
examination.
Expectations
Students should have
an aptitude for working
collaboratively as well as
independently. We hope for
our students to be critical
thinkers with the ability
to challenge, debate and
interpret course material
creatively. A high degree of
autonomy is required when
developing practical work
including rehearsals outside
of lessons.
Future Pathway
Students go on to a diverse
range of pathways including
further study or drama,
musical theatre and acting
at drama schools and
university. This course is also
a fantastic springboard for
students hoping to study
courses in Psychology,
Politics, Marketing, PR,
Advertising, Journalism and
Media.
Key Skills
Textual analysis, devising,
theatrical design, debate,
presenting, public speaking
and the ability to use a
