                          PENGUINS

Winter is a great time to hang out with the zoo’s
Humboldt penguins at THE LIVING COAST. Zoo guests
have a choice of two experiences: Penguin Encounter and
                 Penguin Feeding Adventure.
During a Penguin Encounter, a group of participants,
ages 5 and over, enter an Encounter room where they mix
and mingle with a group of curious birds. An animal care
specialist shares fascinating facts about the penguins and
describes CZS’s conservation work with wild Humboldt
penguins in Punta San Juan, Peru. Our penguins participate
voluntarily. In fact, they line up outside the Encounter-room
door ahead of time without prompting from staff.
During a Penguin Feeding Adventure, one or two visitors
enter the birds’ Rocky Shores habitat and help an animal care
specialist feed the penguins a fishy meal. During winter, this
adventure is offered on weekends to participants who are at
                 least 12 years old.
Tickets for both experiences must be purchased online
in advance. Please visit CZS.org/Events for more information.

                                                                   WITH THE BIRDING
                                                                   CHECKLIST

Brookfield Zoo houses close to 100 species of birds in our buildings.
How many of them can you find? To assist you, our Birds department
created a Birding Checklist; you can check species off the list as you track
them down. Their advice: be patient and observant because many species
are highly camouflaged and their habitats provide many hiding places.
Get a head start by attending the Enrichment Feeding at the rain
forest habitat of FEATHERS & SCALES. Every day around noon,
an animal care specialist puts out succulent pieces of fruits, which
draws many birds out into the open. Rain forest birds there include
the turquoise tanager, red-capped cardinal, curl-crested aracari, Andean
cock-of-the-rock, and blue-billed curassow. The animal care specialist
hangs around to answer any questions you may have.
The zoo’s Birding Checklist is on our website at CZS.org/
BirdingChecklist. Please share your experience and the number
of birds you identified on our social media pages.
