4 Animal Head
Sculptures
ARTIST: Sylvia Shaw Judson
ARRIVAL/UNVEILED: 1954
MEDIUM: Bronze
LOCATION: Roosevelt Fountain
Roosevelt Fountain was created as a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt,
the 26 president of the United States. Four bronze animal heads on
th
limestone bases are installed at points along the walkway that encircles
the fountain.
The animals—an American elk, an American moose, an African
kudu, and a water buffalo—were chosen to commemorate President
Roosevelt’s wildlife conservation policies and his hunting expeditions
in Africa. Judson also contributed to the design of the Fountain itself.
5 Archie
Anatosaurus
ARTIST: Louis Paul Jonas
ARRIVAL/UNVEILED: Approximately 1970
MEDIUM: Fiberglass
LOCATION: Forest Preserves Nature Trail
If you’ve strolled along the Forest Preserves Nature Trail leading
to Swan Lake, you may have spotted a 32-foot-tall dinosaur in
the woods off the trail. That’s Archie the Anatosaurus, a life-sized
replica of a duck-billed dinosaur that lived 70 to 80 million years ago.
Archie is one of nine fiberglass dinosaurs that were displayed
at the 1964 New York World’s Fair—the main attractions in the
Dinoland display sponsored by the Sinclair Oil Corporation.
The energy company was famous for its dinosaur mascot and popular
dino shows. Sinclair became part of the Atlantic-Richfield Company,
which gifted the statue to the Zoo in 1970.
Sculptor Louis Paul Jonas was a brilliant taxidermist, exhibit
designer, and master sculptor. He was the first artist to work with
paleontologists to create dinosaur sculptures that are anatomically
correct and life-sized. His wildlife dioramas are found in dozens
of museums around the world, including the American Museum
of Natural History in New York.
