Perspective
s the new president and CEO
of the Chicago Zoological
A Society and director of
Brookfield Zoo, I am honored to
By Dr. Michael Adkesson be addressing you, our members,
President & CEO
for the first time in this column.
As some of you may know, I was chosen to lead this
world-renowned institution after my esteemed predecessor,
Stuart Strahl, Ph.D., retired after serving the organization
for 18 years.
My name and face may be familiar to you. I’ve worked for
the Chicago Zoological Society since 2008—first as an associate
veterinarian, and then as vice president of clinical medicine
and a member of the management team for the past nine years.
I look forward to the challenge of leading this great organization
and building on its rich history of success in animal care and
conservation—including our support of wildlife conservation
efforts around the globe.
The Chicago Zoological Society is also known for our
award-winning educational programs and groundbreaking
research. In this issue of Gateways, you’ll read about the
Cetacean Welfare Study, the largest study ever conducted
on the health and welfare of dolphins and whales in accredited
zoos and aquariums. The Chicago Zoological Society was
the lead institution in the study, which involved 237 cetaceans
in 43 accredited zoos and aquariums in seven countries. Study
findings and a new app are being used to advance the science
of animal welfare and exemplify the collective commitment
of Brookfield Zoo and other accredited institutions to
continuously enhance the welfare of the animals in our care.
Much of the work we do has been possible because of the
generosity and commitment of our members, donors, sponsors,
and friends. Thank you for your ongoing support.
