Hello, I’m
Sex: Female
Species: Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)
Age: 5 years old
Adult size: Adult females are about 4 feet 2 inches tall and
weigh up to 140 pounds. Orangutans are unique because
there are two forms of sexually mature males: “flanged”
and “nonflanged.” At over 5½ feet tall and about 250 pounds,
flanged males are much larger than females. Nonflanged
males are smaller—some the size of females—and lack the
secondary sex characteristics of flanged males, which
include cheek pads and a large throat sac.
Physical features: Like other great apes—gorillas,
chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans—orangutans
have a large body and no tail. They are covered with
long, shaggy hair that is reddish-orange to dark brown
in color. Their arms are 1½ times the length of their legs.
