introductio

AFTER THE INDEPENDENCE PROCESS, CHILE opened its ports to trade with all the countries of the world. This
                                                                                               n
integration was favored by the fact that the dependence on Europe, both economically and culturally, was not
experienced in Chile in a conflictual manner, but rather as a positive fact, since it was considered that the

relationship with the British power dignified the country. «You can also see an important boom in the port of
Valparaíso, a fact that is reflected in the large number of British commercial houses that settled there. The great
migration of foreign population produced a series of collectives of different nationalities, which began to establish
their own institutions to maintain their cohesion.
And without a doubt, within this group, the British colony had a prominent place within the Valparaíso region. This
work analyzes the presence of the British colony of Valparaíso between the years 1910 and 1960, paying special
attention to the way of life that the members of this community led. In this sense, it is proposed that through the

creation of various institutions founded in the nineteenth century, predominantly of a cultural nature, the British
colony maintained its cohesion, traditions and identity and passed them on to subsequent generations, being able
to extend them until the twentieth century. To achieve this objective, a review will be carried out of the different
institutions created by the British within the Valparaíso region in the 19th century, establishing how these spaces
At the same time, the characteristics of the
contributed to keeping their culture and identity alive. ity.
daily life of this community in the 20th century

are presented, glimpsing the relationship that
British descendants had with Chileans. Finally,

highlight how the individual identity of each
member of the community varied over time
according to their own life experiences. In the

case of the British colony in the Valparaíso
region, you can see how it settled down to

achieve a large and strong community.
However, it will be from 1950 that it will lose

              cohesion and identity.
