british sport
■ sports: tennis, cricket, golf, rugby, hockey and of course football, which became very popular
among the porteños.In 1892 the Santiago Wanderers Sports Club was formed, the oldest in Chile
still in activity, founded by Chileans under the British influence; in 1895 the Valparaiso Wanderers
was born.Another of the customs inherited from the English was the English-style horse races
that were held in Placilla, forming the Valparaíso Spring Meeting association in 1865. The way of
playing could be European, but then the Chilean was celebrated with country parties, typical local
food and lots of alcohol. On one occasion the Chilean horse Huemul beat the British Kentucky and
the newspaper El Progreso published a burlesque: "Many of the most respectable Englishmen in
this port are heavily attacked by spleen, a tremendous disease that only the children of nebulous
England suffer from."
