All of these events in my mother’s life helped me under-
stand my mother’s “strangeness” through the years, her con-
stant hyperanxiety, her episodic hysteria. I always felt com-
passion for her because of the tragedies that colored her life.
Tragedy continued even after she died. In an odd post-
script, my mother’s headstone and the headstones of both my
grandparents were overturned when vandals desecrated Mt.
Carmel Cemetery in Philadelphia in 2017.
