He had typed out a recipe for carnitas, the one he knew I
wanted. He had prepared that and put it aside for me. He
made sure to look for me on a day he knew I was coming in
to pick up my beef cheeks. I had been in a low mood for days,
and his gesture meant so much. I think maybe he had sensed
my mood. I can’t be sure. But I do know that “listening to
your customers” can sometimes go beyond what we usually
think of as “listening to your customers.” I know that, some-
times, small acts of kindness can go further than you think.
