SVMIC Diagnostic Radiology: Interpreting the Risks
Benefits & Drawbacks of a Standardized RadLex
Radiology Lexicon (RadLex) is a proposed unified language
of radiology terms for standardized indexing and retrieval of
radiology information resources that was developed by the
Radiological Society of North America.
The advertised features of RadLex include the following:
• Imaging protocols, picture archiving, and communication
system display formats can be specified by using vendor-
independent language.
• Speech recognition can be improved by including
descriptions linked to the body site imaged and the
modality used.
• Decision support tools can automatically retrieve case-
relevant information in real time (e.g. checklists of image
features to be sought; information from PubMed, the
internet, and proprietary decision of support databases).
Disadvantages include the following:
• Although it is an attractive project, the enormity of the
undertaking makes universal adoption difficult.
• Standardized reporting templates and RadLex are “best
practices” initiatives but have not been nationally accepted
and cannot be considered the standard of care.
• Radiologists develop “styles of dictation” over several years
of training. Adopting may result in a learning curve that
compromises the accuracy of the reports.
