Profile of Nurse Practitioners
In August 2020, The AANP announced the results from its 2019
National Nurse Practitioner Sample Survey. This survey has
been conducted periodically since 2007 with the purpose of
capturing vital information regarding practice, compensation,
and benefits for nurse practitioners (NPs). There are over
290,000 NPs licensed in the United States (up from 248,000 in
2018) :

• An estimated 30,000 new NPs completed their academic
programs in 2018-2019
• 95.7 percent of NPs prescribe medications, averaging 20
prescriptions per day
• NPs hold prescriptive privileges including controlled
substances in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
• 89.7 percent are focused on primary care
• 41.7 percent of NPs hold hospital privileges; 11.7 percent
have long term care privileges
• The mean base salary for NPs is $110,000 (survey report)
• 57.4 percent of NPs see three or more patients per hour
(survey report)
• Nurse Practitioners have been in practice an average of 10
years
• The average age for NPs is 47 years old (survey report)
