Safe Injection Practices
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has
established a set of recommendations as “Safe
Injection Practices” which are designed to prevent

the transmission of preventable disease during
administration of injectable medications. Resources
including print materials and videos are available on the
site as well.
CDC recommendations include:
• Use aseptic technique when handling injection supplies.
• Never reuse needles, lancets, cannula, or syringes - these
are sterile, single-use items.
» A new, clean needle and syringe should always be
used to access a multi-dose vial.
» Infusion and administration sets (i.e., intravenous
bags, tubing, and connectors) should be used for one
patient only and disposed properly after use.
• Use single-dose vials for parenteral medications whenever
possible.
» Do not administer medications from single-dose vials
or ampules to multiple patients.
» All single-dose vials or vials without preservatives
must be discarded at time of use and not reserved for
further use.
» If multi-dose vials must be used, both the needle or
