SVMIC Collaborating with Advanced Practice Providers

The Connor case serves as an example of how failure to comply
with the rules and regulations governing the supervision of or

collaboration with APPs can lead to a host of protracted legal

entanglements, disciplinary action and potential medical

                   professional liability.

Now, let’s look at the questions posed earlier. Since most states

have similar provisions, we will answer these questions assuming
the general intent across SVMIC’s service area, without including

each state’s specific language, unless it deviates substantively.

                   Steps before Supervising or Collaborating

                   with APPs

What must a physician do before supervising or collaborating with

an advanced practice provider? Let’s examine some of the most

common steps a physician should take beforehand.

                   Contract

Although this course focuses on many aspects of supervising or

collaborating with APPs, it is crucial that before entering into a

legal agreement, providers should contract with a healthcare
attorney specializing in these arrangements. Paying an attorney for

a few hours of work before agreeing to a supervision arrangement

could save significant liability exposure if an advanced practice

provider negligently treats a patient, the patient sues the physician,

and the physician’s insurance policy does not cover the physician
