Brian Duggan lists several origins of smooth Salukis: from Kurds at the Euphrates, near the
border to today's Syria (p.83), Egyptian Harem (see photo above, page 37) and Egyptian
Princess, origin not clear, imported as the first short-haired "Salukis" by Mrs Foster Mitchell
in 1922 (p.139), Pharaoh, origin not clear, imported by Miss Thinne (p.161) in the 1920s.
Other imports with short-haired Salukis are documented, such as Jenna in the 1960s, who
came from Syria.
In the North African Sloughi, the characteristic of feathering parallel to smooth individuals is
unthinkable.
In the case of the Middle Eastern Saluki, however, it should be noted that in some areas, as
well as in some tribes, purely short-haired varieties have historically occurred. These types,
which have developed through sexual isolation, should be analysed more closely. As we found
with the tribes, there are large areas of movement in which they usually move to certain
pastures at the appropriate times of year. However, they do not do this arbitrarily, but move
seasonally to pastures that have been known for centuries. Transgressions of these
"boundaries of movement areas" are dramatically prevented by the neighbouring tribes, as we
see quite drastically in the film "Lawrence of Arabia".
