-Hunter on sight - the sighthound Sloughi. But not only.
Sighthounds are considered pure sight hunters in the western world.
Sighthounds are supposed to carry their heads up in the show ring, which is supposed to
show the look of game on the horizon. Sight hunting with sighthounds is generally
referred to as “hounding”. This form of hunting is prohibited in Germany.
However, hounding with sighthounds is not the only form of this type of hunting with this
term, it is also carried out in a completely different way with completely different types
of dogs. We have to distinguish between sighthounds that catch the hare in the run and
the persistent running dogs that pursue the game for hours and tire it out in the process.
When we describe the term “hounding”, this form of hunting is a chase of game. The
definition is: “Pursuit of game with a pack of hounding dogs”. However, different types of
hounding dogs are used for the hunt. Besides the sighthound, which hounds without
making a sound while hunting, it is above all the running dogs such as the Beagle,
Tricolore, Porcelaine or Foxhound that pursue the game and sound. These dogs, however,
do not pursue the game on sight and in a fast and short run, but with the nose in a kind of
persistent, fast trot.
