                                          FOREWORD

BY M.-DOMINIQUE CRAPON DE CAPRONA - USA

The Sloughi Review presents its 13th issue, dedicated entirely to the hunting sighthound
        Sloughi.

Thomas Liedtke takes us through an extensive and very interesting study of hunting with
dogs and with sighthounds, from the beginnings in antiquity and domestication to now.

The various chapters highlight various aspects of hunting in ancient times, what
domestication means and what a breed is, the scientific approach to the hunting dog,
hunting in ancient Egypt, hunting with sighthounds by the Greeks and the Romans.

A detailed description of hunting with Sloughis and Azawakhs in the 1800s and early
1900s tells us what and how these breeds hunt.

Nomadism, transhumance, domestication in this context follows.

The chapter about hunting and herd protection explains training methods for herd
        protectors which include the Sloughi.

The summary puts the Sloughi in the general frame presented here, explaining the
mentality of the breed and how to best handle it. The Sloughi is not the hunter’s servant
        but the hunter’s partner.

There is a lot of research and work involved in this text. Anyone genuinely interested in
the origin and background that enabled this beautiful breed to evolve should find this
article an excellent source of information to go back to often.

In the western world we love our Sloughis as companions, we admire them in shows, we
enjoy them in racing and coursing events because they love the sport and because in
some countries we cannot hunt with them.

Let us not forget what a Sloughi truly is, what kind of historical, physical and cultural

environment shaped this ancient African hunting and guarding sighthound with a specific
mentality. It is all explained here.
