Case Study 2
Supervisors Are the Key to a Safe and Efficient Job
John Doe, a supervisor, receives a call from Bill Buck, his supervisor, at 8:00 A.M. directing him
to take his crew into the generator to do an emergency repair. Buck states that the job has to be
completed within the next hour because the new generator is scheduled for startup at 9:00 A.M.
“I haven’t been out there to look at the job, there’s no time,” Buck states, “but do whatever you
need to do and get that generator back up and running.” Ten minutes later, an emergency call is
received at the safety office indicating that an employee has fallen about 12 feet from a single-
plank work platform inside the shelter.
Before entering the shelter, the safety representative tests and determines that the atmosphere
is oxygen-deficient. When Bill Buck arrives on the scene, he shakes his head and says that the
accident could have been avoided if the safety department had tested the atmosphere before
the crew entered the area.
