So what might they do? For example, a Nine in Shadow, when told to do something in a strong way, a demand, may say yes, but they really mean no. So they either won’t do it or they take a long time and put it off. I call it “going stubborn.” They give you the outward appearance of accommodating but they’re really doing their own thing.
Diplomacy and the open-mindedness of a Nine are two of their Best Self behaviors. Nines really can appreciate all sides of an issue. They’re generally fabulous mediators. they’ve got superior negotiation skills. They’re really able to reconcile different opinions to get a consensus among a group; they’re very skillful at that.
However, when they go into Shadow, this appreciation of all sides of an issue can go to an extreme and they can really have a very difficult time taking a position, and actually come across extremely indecisive. They may say, “I’ll get back to you,” but then you never hear from them. In addition, sometimes, they’ll take a position and then change a little

later, and then they’ll change it a different way. They keep flip-flopping back and forth out of this indecisiveness.
In Shadow, they may also identify so much with others’ opinions that they can actually get to a point where they lose touch with their own preferences. In these cases, they actually start to rely on other people for their own opinions.
In Best Self, Nines are comfortable and settled. They like stability, they like their routines, they like their familiarity, they like predictability. When they settle into something, they tend to stay for a while which is really quite nice. They prefer to be in an unpressured state of autopilot as much as they possibly can, and when they’re in this state they generally perform quite well. This is where they’re really at their best.
However, when they must be in this comfortable, settled place and they must have peace and harmony, they will create an artificial state of comfort for themselves. In Shadow, they may go all out to avoid stress, so you might find them engaging in unimportant or low priority
activities because they contribute to their sense of calm. For example, in Shadow, a Nine might sit on the phone excessively or ramble in conversation with little respect for time, prolonging an artificial state of bliss and not having to deal with things that are creating discomfort for them. As a result, when they’re in this place, they can be neglectful and ignore important tasks and things that they need to get done.
In Best Self Nines are calm, complacent and very easy-going people. They generally don’t have hidden agendas, they have a wonderful ability to build connections with people, and they’re extremely patient. They also have a way of making other people around them feel at ease and relaxed. They have this really neat, positive outlook which really influences and impacts other people and they’re also able to keep a real nice healthy perspective.
In Best Self, Nines are not the kind of folks that are going to overreact if something goes wrong and this calming influence in this very pressure-filled world is a pretty neat thing. With Best Self Nines, you
