he Jaipuria khandaan, which has played a pioneer role in developing India’s textile, sugar, me-
T dia among other industries, has a long and an abiding association with education dating back
to pre-independence India when the Seth Anandram Jaipuria College, Calcutta was inaugurated in
1945 by Congress party leader and later independent India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
After shifting base to Kanpur a year later, the family promoted several education institutions in Uttar
Pradesh, including the Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Kanpur in 1974.
That very year, Shishir, a fresh commerce graduate of Christ Church College, Kanpur, with a law degree
from the city’s DAV Law College, joined the family business as an executive officer of the Swadeshi
Cotton Mills, Kanpur. Since then during an eventful career of 36 years, he has held several important
positions in family companies including Ginni Filaments Ltd, managing director of The Pioneer Ltd,
which publishes The Pioneer, an English language daily. Some of his philanthropic initiatives include a
chain of public guesthouses, temples, Vedic institutions and charitable hospitals.
“The Jaipuria family has been deeply involved with Indian education for over 70 years because we
believe in the transformative power of education for national development and individual empow-
erment. Over the past decade, my focus has been on expanding SAJGEI’s footprint, especially in K-12
education as it is the foundation of all future learning and workplace success,” says Shishir Jaipuria
