DR. CHENRAJ ROYCHAND
Founder-Chairman, JGI Group
D istinguished educationist, entrepreneur, angel investor and philanthropist, Dr. Chenraj Roy-
chand is founder-chairman of the Bangalore/Bengaluru-based JGI Group (estb.1990) com-
prising 77 schools and colleges and a university providing high-quality K-12, undergraduate, post-
graduate and research education to 72,000 students from 38 countries in 64 campuses across the
country. Among them, Jain (Deemed-to-be University), Bangalore, ranked in the 91-95 band of the
India University Rankings 2020 of the London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), and Jain Interna-
tional Residential School, Bangalore, ranked India’s #2 co-ed boarding school in the latest Educa-
tionWorld India School Rankings 2019-20.
The seeds of JGI were planted in 1990 when Roychand, a modestly successful itinerant yarns and
textile trader, often witnessed the dismal condition of children and youth deprived of acceptable
quality education, particularly in tier II-IV cities/towns of the Indian hinterland. “I had an awakening
that education is the necessary precondition of national development and decided to work full-
time in education and promoted the group’s first institution — the Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain
College, Bangalore,” he recalls. Since then under his inspiring leadership JGI has promoted 77 edu-
cation institutions, nationally reputed for providing holistic education experiences with special fo-
cus on sports and co-curricular education. Within three decades, JGI has nurtured six sportspersons
who have represented India at the Olympic Games, and 200 sportspersons who have participated
in national and international track and field events.
“From day one, my mission has been to build institutions of education excellence that develop in-
tellectual capital for the benefit of the nation and Indian society. We take great care to ensure that
JGI institutions provide contemporary, market-driven, globally accepted early childhood to research
education rooted in universal human values,” says Roychand.
