Extension to Science. Nobel Prize
Have you ever heard about somebody winning the Nobel Prize? Have you ever thought how these prizes began?
The Nobel Prizes have been awarded every year since 1901 to people who
have done outstanding work in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature or peace. Every winner receives a medal, a diploma and a large monetary award.
This famous prize was instituted by the late Alfred Nobel, in 1895 without knowing the effect it would have in the future. Mr. Nobel signed his last will and testament in which he left most of his fortune to a fund, indicating the following: “To be distributed annually in the form of prizes to those who during the preceding year have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.”
Alfred Nobel was an engineer, chemist and inventor, his most famous invention being dynamite.
The peace prize is given in Oslo, Norway. All of the other prizes are given in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel are decided by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Nobel Prize in Literature is decided by the Swedish Academy and the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the committee appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.
