Research Report
A research report is the result of an investigation of a certain topic, based on reliable sources.
To write a REsEARCH REPoRT you should:
Choose a topic.
Find information about the topic you chose. You will need more than one source.
start with a strong introduction to interest the reader.
write your thesis; this will be the main subject of your report.
Make a preliminary outline to help organize your ideas before you start writing your report.
Carefully review your word choice.
write your report based on the information you gathered.
Your report should have an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
It is important that your report has a clear, logical organization. This means your report has to have order. It is like trying to find a pencil in a messy drawer, and trying to find it in a clean organized drawer. You should make it easy for the reader to find your main idea. There are different ways you can do this:
a) You can use chronological patterns; here your information will be presented according to a progression of time.
b) Sequential patterns arrange information step- by-step. You can use words like first, next and last.
c) Compare and contrast; you will use this if you are telling how two or more things are alike and how are they different.
Credit your sources, using the proper citation. This means to acknowledge the original author. You will need to cite:
a) Direct quotes: sentences or phrases written by somebody else. b) Facts: Information gathered by a specific person or source.
c) Images: Drawings, pictures, illustrations and graphs done by somebody else.
