Joanna Khayatpour
Teacher of the Year - Elementary
Topeka Drive Charter School for Advanced Studies
I am so thankful to teach at Topeka Charter SAS Elementary School. I have been
teaching for 10 years. As I look back through my life, I will never forget my third or sixth
grade teachers. They impacted me and guided me in ways that have shaped who I am.
I will never forget the day we “mummified chickens” to learn about the ancient Egypt
civilization or all the creative and inspirational ways they brought lessons to life.
Therefore, my teaching philosophy is believing that it is essential to bring engaging lessons to students to
allow their curiosity and excitement to lead the way. There are times that I lay in bed, walk the grocery store
aisles, or talk with friends when an idea comes to mind, and I will stop and think… “I can do something like
this with my students!” And there a lesson comes to life.
These students are our next generation, and I want to challenge them academically, but I also believe in
teaching kindness and love. My goal is to make each, and every student, that walks into my classroom feel
valued, loved, and cared for. I can only hope that a few of my students will look back in their life as they get
older and remember their fourth grade teacher Mrs. Khayatpour and our learning experiences together. I truly
believe that if each student feels loved and heard by their teacher, they will be open to academic challenges
and therefore reach levels they didn’t know they ever could.
