produce was so encouraging. Some of the staff were inspired and planted their own rooftop gardens and community gardens. They have planted organic vegetables such as spinach, coriander, sweet corn, chillies and tapioca. An urban agriculture movement has begun which will dramatically improve livelihoods.
Empart also has two farms that are making an impact in their communities. Produce grown includes wheat, chickpeas, lemons, blueberries, jackfruit, mangoes and bananas. They are also raising ducks, turkeys, chickens and goats. The harvest from these crops is used to feed our teams and is also sold to local villagers. The farms employ people from local areas. We have seen a dramatic improvement in their lives too.
“I am getting paid for my labor on the farm, but what I count more than that is the lessons I learn. My association with the team leaders and campus staff has significantly transformed my thought pattern. We never gave importance to
the education of children, especially of girl children. My association with the team here changed my perspective. I
am determined to educate
all my children irrespective of their gender. This lesson that I learned is great, and my friends are also testifying similar truths with me.” Par*, farm worker.
