General Order No. 43 states “the grades and ratings of warrant officers, chief petty officers, petty officers, and other enlisted persons in the Coast Guard shall be the same as in the Navy, in so far as the duties of the Coast Guard may require, with the continuance in the Coast Guard of the grade of surfman.”
19 January 1949
The tanker Gulfstream collided with Icebreaker USCGC Eastwind. The collision and resulting fire killed 13 of Eastwind’s crew, nine of whom were Chief Petty Officers.
20 May 1958
President Dwight Eisenhower signed Public Law 85-422, establishing the rates of Senior Chief and Master Chief.
