BMCM Charles Calhoun became the first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard.

Chief Petty Officer work Khakis were officially retired. Coast Guard Commandant Chester Bender introduced “Bender Blues” as replacements in 1972 to differentiate Coast Guard Personnel from their Navy counterparts.

Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate Terrell E. Horne, III was killed in the line of duty while leading a boarding team from the USCGC Halibut in counter-smuggling operations near Santa Cruz Island, CA. Senior Chief Horne disregarded his own safety in order to protect a fellow crewmember when their small boat was intentionally rammed, forcibly ejecting him from the boat.
