man  tried  every art  that  kindness  could  devise

                            to  make  hint  eat;  but  in  a  short  time  tlie  dog,

                            escaping,  regained  his  favourite  place.                Every

                            morning  for  three  months  the  mourner  visited

                            his protector merely to  receive Ins food;, and  then
                            returned  to  the  ashes  of  his  dead  master,  and

                            each  day  lie  was  more  sad,  in ore  meagre,  and

                            more languishing.

                                His  protector at length endeavoured  to try and
                            prevent  Ins  visits  to  the  grave  of  his  master.

                            He  tied  him  up, but  what  manacle  is  there  that

                            can ultimately  triumph  over  nature?  He  broke

                            or  bit  through  his  bonds, again  returned  to  the
                            grave,  and  never  quitted  it  more.  It  was  in

                            vain  that  all  kind  means  were  used  to  bring

                            him  back.         Even  the  humane  jailer  assisted

                            to  take  him  food,  but  he  would  eat  no  longer;

                            for  four-and-twenty  hours  ho  was  absolutely
                            observed to employ his weakened limbs in digging

                            up the earth  that  separated  him  from the  being

                            he had served.  Affection  gave him strength, but

                            his  efforts were too vehement for his powers;  his
                            whole  frame  became  convulsed,  he  shrieked  in
