%aek like one determined, at all hazards, to

worship the rising sun* Their Whitey trotted in
and tool; his place beside Karsuk. After a while

Schnapps came timidly to bed; but he did nut

                              venture too Hear,

Thus situated they fell asleep; while poor
Erebus lay moaning by himself* with not a dog

among all his late followers to do him the

slightest service. Even Amna-aya forsook him,

and linked her fortunes with those of the new
master, not even going near Erebus to lick his

bleeding wounds, as she would have gladly done

the day before. Once she made the effort, and

got very near, but thinking better of it she

forsook the poor fellow completely, and went
over "bag and baggage” as they say, to the

                              enemy.

Thus was Jack's victory won. And it was
complete. The whole team now at once acknow

ledged him at once as master, and proffered him

their allegiance. Poor Erebus was as badly oft

as old King Lear The little dogs and the big

dogs all barked at him now.
