and his general appearance altogether was not
pie possessing. But there was a something in his
eyes which betokened more than usual intelli
gence, and a certain staid ness of manner, combi ned
with common sense, which more than counter
balanced Ills apparent faults or misfortunes.
As the soldiers marched along “ at ease,”
Moustache was now their only follower; being
the only living thing to attract their attention,
several looked at him.
“ We have not a single dog in the regiment/’
said le petit tambour to a tall drum-major
marching by his side. “ His looks are not in his
favour by any means; but ho may be a good dog
for all that. Although he docs not appear to be
very old, he has the appearance of being able to
forage for himself. Do you think we might
take him with us?”
