                               moment  evci1y  .soldier  was  011  Lis  feet;  in  two

                              minutes  they  had  readied  the  outposts,  and  in

                               less  than  no  time,  almost,  the  Austiians, finding

                               their project  discovered,  took  to  their  heels and

                               ran!
                                  When daylight  came, inquiry was  made  as  to

                               who had given the alarm*  No man  laid claim  to

                               having  performed  the  important duty, so it was

                               unanimously conceded that the signal service had

                               been rendered singly and  solely by  no other than
                               the  favourite  dog  of  the  regiment*  Moustache.

                               The next question was, how should such a deserv­

                               ing act be rewarded?
                                  Had  Moustache  been  a  Grecian dog  Jus  effigy

                               wotdd  have  been  sculptured  in  marble  by  the

                               most famous  artist  in  Athens,  and  placed  on one

                               of the highest pillars;  had he belonged to ancient

                               Home,  he would  have  been  carried  in  state  and
                               crowned  on  the  Parthenon;  but  being  only  a

                               humble  French  dog,  it  was  resolved  to  toward

                               him  in  a  much  more  substantial  manner.  The
