refused to go, and as the man could not make

him move, he contrived to chain him to the post

by which he was standing. Such an indignity

was too much for the soldier dog to endure; so,
seizing the first opportunity of the man’s absence,

he contrived to escape, and fled from the camp of

his own regiment to that of a corps of chasseurs,
to most of whom he was well-known, They

endeavoured to convey him to his old quarters,

but he would not stay. The chasseurst therefore,

guessing that something had occurred to hurt his

feelings, resolved to keep him, and treated him
well, adding the number of their regiment to the

                             one already on his collar.

On the morning of the battle of Ansterlitz

Moustache was early on the field with his new

comrades- and here he was enabled to perform
the grand achievement of his life. It was in this

wise:—-While the battle was at its height, the

standard-bearer of the chasseurs had the mis

fortune to find himself surrounded by theeneiny,
and in danger of losing his colours. Moustache,

perceiving the state of matters, gallantly rushed
