refused to go, and as the man could not make
him move, he contrived to chain him to the post
by which he was standing. Such an indignity
was too much for the soldier dog to endure; so,
seizing the first opportunity of the man’s absence,
he contrived to escape, and fled from the camp of
his own regiment to that of a corps of chasseurs,
to most of whom he was well-known, They
endeavoured to convey him to his old quarters,
but he would not stay. The chasseurst therefore,
guessing that something had occurred to hurt his
feelings, resolved to keep him, and treated him
well, adding the number of their regiment to the
one already on his collar.
On the morning of the battle of Ansterlitz
