honoured, Every one was proud of the dog, and

the dog was proud of his regiment.

But lie had not secured his honour scatheless.
To save his life it was found necessary to

amputate his injured limb. The suffering hero

underwent the operation without a murmur; and

by kind and skilful treatment he was soon able
to limp about the camp on his three legs, getting

a good word or a kindly pat from every one, and

exchanging a look of pride whenever his ribbon

                              or medal was alluded to.

The commanding officer issued orders that
Moustache was to be considered as an honorary

member of every mess in the regiment, and

treated accordingly at whatever one he might

present himself; and for a considerable time he

thus retained his position in his regiment.
But now that ho had so distinguished himself,

and been distinguished by his caviarades, his

pride was great, and his feelings extremely
sensitive. He could not brook an unkind word,

or the slightest insult. One day, either thought
