A FAITHFUL FRIEND.
|j|||ATE in September, of the year 1807, there
arose a great storm, ^v]iiclt is still spoken
of by those who remember it as “ the
September gale.” There happened to be quite
a gathering in the bouse at the time, and the
children were intensely interested in watching
the progress of the stormf especially after the
rain abated, so that we could see out over the
water. We found there was a vessel stranded
on the West Bank, immediately in front of our
Mouse, about five miles from the shore. We
afterwards learned that she was an Italian barque,
laden with oranges and oil. With the glass we
could see her quite plainly, see the waves
breaking clcar over her, see the men in her
