This happened soon after he and
Mrs. Moran had decided to adopt a

little girl to bring up as a sister to their

own sturdy lads. The Doctor was fond
of all children ; but if one is to adopt a

child it is as well to select one to whom

Dame Nature has been kind, and given
beauty and health and a good disposi

tion, these being advantages that all the

                                         Doctor’s money could not buy.

One day, then, several years before
this story begins, Dr. Moran received a

letter informing him that, if he would

go to a certain home for friendless chil
dren, he would find just such a child

as he was in search of.

Mrs. Moran being too ill at that time

to leave the house, he went alone to this
institution, where he found the prettiest

little twin sisters Imaginable, They had

soft hazel eyes^ and rings of red gold
