arrival  had  caused,  Peggy  had  crept

                                      aside,  and  now  stood  watching  them

                                      with  her great, mournful  eyes.

                                         Wilifred, now  turning  in  the  Doctor’s
                                      arms,  held  out  her  hands  to  her,  cry­

                                      ing,  “  O  Peggy!  dear  Peggy I  I ’m  so

                                      sorry,  but  I Ve  made  everything  harder

                                      for  you.       Mrs.  Bagley  is  angry,  oh  !
                                      dreadfully.  angry,  and  I  don't  know

                                      what  she  will  do  to  you;”

                                         “  I  knew  she  ’d  be  roused,’1  murmured
                                      Peggy ;  “ but  no  matter,  I  m  not afraid,

                                      —  not  so  very  much  afraid,”             But  her

                                      teeth  chattered,  and  she  trembled  vio­

                                      lently.     Presently  she  closed  her  eyes,

                                      and  for  a  moment  everything  was  d a rk ;
                                      and  then  suddenly  she  realized  that  she

                                      was  in  Mrs,  Moran’s  arms,  that  W ili­

                                      fred  was  holding  her  hand,  and,  stran­
                                      ger  than  all,  the  Doctor  looking  down

                                      kindly  upon  her  with  no  displeasure  at
